CBD Oil- Miracle cure or just another health trend

Updated: Nov 14, 2019

Physicians, naturopaths, and health bloggers swear by the healing abilities of CBD oil, claiming it reduces anxiety, improves sleep, helps with pain management, reduces inflammation, and even cures cancer. The market is booming and more and more companies are entering the already competitive market. According to a recent study, the global market size of CBD oil in 2019 was $270 million and is expected to grow to a whooping $2420 million in 2024(1).

What is CBD oil?

Cannabidiol (CBD) oil is is the second most active ingredient in cannabis but can also be derived directly from the hemp plant. Hemp and marijuana are cousin plants and even though CBD is found in marijuana, alone, it does not cause a high. According to the World Health Organization, there is no evidence of public health issues related to pure CBD oil, nor is there potential for abuse or dependence of CBD, making it a very safe treatment option.

Will CBD oil make me high?

People often confuse CBD and THC. While few CBD oils do add THC, most contain just pure CBD oil. THC is the psychoactive ingredient found in marijuana and the only ingredient that can get you high. CBD oil alone will not make you high, but will give you some of the same great benefits.

What is CBD oil used for?

CBD oil is well known for its calming effects and ability to reduce inflammation and pain. People use CBD oil for arthritis, joint and muscle pain, anxiety, insomnia, depression, and even acne. Due to its anti inflammatory capabilities, people have also used it for Crohn’s disease and other irritable bowel diseases, various autoimmune disorders, and certain cancers. Several people claim to have reversed autoimmune disorders such as lupus, hashimotos, and hepatitis with the help of CBD oil.

Some of the strongest scientific evidence for CBD oil is in its effectiveness in treating epilepsy disorders such as LGS and Dravet syndrome. These conditions often do not respond to anti-seizure medications but studies have shown that CBD oils greatly reduces and, in some cases, eliminates seizure episodes completely. The FDA recently approved Epidolex, a medication derived from cannabis that is used specifically to treat epilepsy syndromes(2).

What forms does CBD come in?

CBD oil often comes as a liquid that you put under your tongue, but also comes in gummy bears or in capsule form. The CBD oil I’ve taken in the past is liquid but many people prefer a pill or gummy which covers up the naturally bitter taste of the oil. CBD oil is also added to creams, often pain relieving cream that helps relax tight muscles or reduce inflammation caused by arthritis.

While there is not much CBD in hemp seed oil, it is still a great oil to have around and is packed with essential vitamins and fatty acids. While CBD oil is derived from the stalks, leaves, and flowers of the hemp plant, hemp seed oil comes from the small seeds of the Cannabis sativa plant. Hemp seed oil is great for the skin, hair, and can be used in several recipes such as salads, sauces, cold soups, and smoothies.

Are all CBD oils the same?

Nothing is created equally. From vitamins to chocolate brands, there are always varying qualities among products, and CBD oil is no different. The CBD oil industry is not regulated and so you have to do some research to really know that you’re getting pure and high quality oil. Some brands are more reputable than others and there seem to be new companies popping up everyday.

My favorite site for comparing CBD oil brands is CBD Oil Review where they rate several CBD brands based on quality, safety, charity, mission, and innovation. Whether you care more about safety and quality or the company’s values, this site allows you to see where each company stands based on these five criteria.

The Bottom Line

Unfortunately, CBD oil is not a cure-all for cancer, the way some health coaches make it out to be. However, this doesn’t mean it can’t help the body fight cancer or help cancer patients with some of the less pleasant side effects of conventional cancer treatments.

Studies have shown that CBD oils helps with certain conditions such as anxiety, seizures, insomnia, and chronic pain. Because CBD oil is not regulated, it is important to do your research to make sure you are getting a high quality oil with no additives. Like I always say, it can’t hurt to try and if you think CBD oil might help you, it’s a very safe option with minimal to no side effects.
